As children, probably the most used word in our vocabulary would have been ‘WHY?’ This is because when we are children, questioning things is second nature to us. Our curiosity and fascination with the world we live in are insatiable. The reason why? We simply want to know as much as possible about the world and what it can offer us. We are excited to learn, to grow.
Where does that same excitement and zest for life go once we become adults? How often do you ask questions in your adult life? When was the last time you asked yourself ‘why?’ – why am I going to work….why did I react that way…or, why am I here?
Once we lose that child’s eager perspective and begin to take on the cynicism that we accrue with adulthood, we can become stuck in our ways. We can ‘unlearn’ many of the important qualities that we once enjoyed as children. Three of these most important qualities being; curiosity, open-mindedness and an ability to see things for what they are. For example, when do you hear a child passing judgment of another? Our understanding of what’s ‘good’ and what’s ‘bad’ is something that is instilled in us as we grow up, making us increasingly judgemental of the world and the people around us.
But what is the solution? After all, we cannot stay children forever! However, what we can do is re-learn some of those childlike qualities that may continue to benefit us well into our adult lives.
If you’re looking to get back in touch with your inner child, here are the 3 most important things you can do:
As an adult, you may believe you already know all that is worth knowing. As a result, you can become stuck in a rut of the same old…wary of the unknown and unfamiliar. So – try stepping outside of your comfort zone every once in a while! Whether it’s going to new places, trying new food, meeting new people or simply starting up a new hobby – these new experiences, in any form, can help you to grow as a person. Just as it did when you were younger!
There can be so much to experience if you step out of your comfort zone and see things you haven’t seen or experienced before. Try to do something new every once in a while, something that might normally have scared you a little, or is outside of your comfort zone. You never know what you might find!
The most successful people are those that always ask questions. Questions indicate having a passion for something; they are a signpost of growth. As adults, we can become easily embarrassed or self-conscious of how others perceive us – which perhaps explains why the older we get, the fewer questions we ask. Don’t let this stop you – whether you’re asking yourself a question or posing a question to an expert on something you’re interested in, get back into the habit!
When you were a child, you most likely asked a lot of questions, this is because you are always learning and interested in what is around you. It’s always a great idea to ask more questions so that you never stop learning and can always keep your brain active. There is so much to learn from this world, so why stop when you grow up?
Reignite your curiosity! It’s important to bring the curiosity and excitement that we felt as children back into our adult lives. After all, it is this very same zeal and curiosity that drives successful entrepreneurs to their very first business idea. Or encourages couples to quit their jobs and travel the world. Having curiosity makes life fun once again! To revive your curiosity, why not try your hand at a new hobby or pick-up an old interest? You’ll be surprised by how such a simple change can have such a positive ripple-effect across your entire life.
With these 3 simple steps, you can get back to the wisdom your once younger-self understood only too well. Bringing back the child in you is not only a brilliant way to inject some much-needed fun into your life, but can help to restore some powerful child-like qualities you thought you’d forgotten about.
