
Are you used to feeling strung-out, overstretched or just down-right frazzled? In our results-driven, modern age it has become the ‘norm’ to live life in the fast lane. I am going to discuss the common causes of chronic stress.
When others ask us how we are, we wear our answer of ‘stressed’ almost as a badge of honor. For many of us, our stress has come to be seen as nothing more than a sign that we are getting things ‘done’. It’s regarded as a sign of progress and ‘necessary’ hard work.
Whilst a certain amount of stress is natural (it is essential for the fight-or-flight response that is in fact, very useful in high-pressure situations), living in a permanent state of stressed-out living will do nothing for your health, longevity or life’s overall happiness.
So, if stress is something you’re overly-familiar with, what should you do about it?
It doesn’t matter if you’re deprived of love, kindness or even just good quality foods…when you feel as though you’re lacking in what your body and soul craves, your brain chemistry immediately senses that something is up. It's response? Immediate stress.
We’re a sociable species; we depend on our community or ‘tribe’ in countless ways. Being secluded from our ‘tribe’ or feeling as though we are on the fringes of society creates a sense of loneliness that can create a perpetual state of stress in the body and brain. Just as good relationships and a sense of community are vital for a healthy life; toxic relationships are a huge threat to one. When you’re continually spending time with people that make you feel small, unworthy or even threatened you’re seriously impacting your health and happiness for the worse.
It is said that we are all a reflection of the 5 people we surround ourselves with the most; so pick your friends wisely!
Even a job you love can leave you feeling stressed from time to time. What can cause you chronic stress, however, is continually opting for jobs that leave you feeling soulless. Want to keep your stress levels in check? Then you need to keep your integrity.
Resentment stems from an inability to forgive. When you harbor resentment, be it against your partner, your father or your fellow employee you are basically feeding the flames of your chronic stress. You know that feeling you get every time you replay in your mind when somebody wronged you…that tight, resistant feeling in your chest? Let that go. You’ll feel all the lighter for it.
Past traumas and grievances, if not healed, can in fact grow and manifest themselves in a variety of ways as we become adults. You may even be unaware of what is reigniting these old feelings in you – but get to the bottom of them, and you’ll unburden yourself of them for good.
If you’re someone with a particularly dark worldview, then you’re body may be living in a permanent state of fright. This is because a pessimist is continually having thoughts along the lines of ‘I’m unlovable…’, ‘there’s not enough money’, and ‘life isn’t fair…’ which stimulates a heck of a lot of stress in the body.
Would you describe yourself as a ‘worry-wart’? If you’re full of anxious thoughts…will he break my heart…have I exercised enough this week…will the kids be ok…of course you’re going to send your stress triggers into overdrive. Stick with the present moment and stop letting your mind run away with you!
If you recognize most of these causes for stress in your own life and this list alone has got you feeling tense, relax! Practicing greater awareness over the factors contributing towards your stress puts you in the powerful position of being able to do something about it.
Action is key here. So once you are able to pinpoint the biggest stress triggers in your own life, your next step should be to eliminate them for good.
Those are some of the biggest causes of chronic stress, and I hope they have helped you to understand your causes a little bit better.
