Intuition vs. Fear: How To Start Trusting Your Instincts


From time to time, we all face the same dilemma; should we follow our head or our heart?

Butterflies in your stomach… clammy hands… When you're facing a fork in the road, how do you know if you're listening to your fears or your intuition? When you're frozen with inaction, how can you tell if you've fallen victim to your fears or if this is all your intuition trying to scream at you ‘Stoooop! This isn’t the right direction/choice/move for you!'?

This is an important issue; after all, too often people find themselves ‘stuck’, incapable of action because they’re afraid of whether or not they will make the right decision. To prevent this and to be able to break through the barriers that stand between ourselves and our dreams, we, therefore, need a way to know whether something is not working for us because we’ve allowed fear to overcome us or because our gut is trying to tell us that something is not quite right.

Fear dulls us; it keeps us static when we should be electric! Intuition, on the other hand, is there to steer us clear of trouble and keep us on the right track.

So when you’re just not getting where you need to be, what’s holding you back? Your fears or your gut?

How To Develop Your Intuition With Two Questions

1. Is It Fear Or Intuition Talking?

When you consider the dilemma that's bothering you, for example, it could be a new job, a big move, a romantic relationship, what mental space do you enter into?

Do you become overwhelmed with exciting (sometimes confused with scary) visions for the future? Or do you feel heavy, like a weight has been placed around your shoulders and you cannot envision your life beyond this choice or next move?

If it’s the latter, that’s your intuition holding up a massive ‘STOP’ sign for you to take heed of.

However if regardless of the butterflies in your stomach, the thought of this big change or choice expands you and sends your imagination running wild, you know that your hesitation is a result of fear. Nothing more.

2. Forget Your Gut, What Does Your Body Say?

Our words can lie, but the body doesn’t. So, when you’re unsure of whether or not your choices are being influenced by fear or by intuition, consider what your body has to say on the matter.

When discussing the person, decision or choice in question, perhaps with a friend, what happens to your body language? Do you become lifeless and small? Distracted, with an unfocused gaze and a hunched posture? Or do you open up, your face animated and your hands gesturing excitedly as you talk? You may think that something scares you or that your mind is set on something, but your body may tell an altogether different story.

So, become more observant to what your body is telling you. Are you being held back by fear or intuition?

The answer can mean the difference between remaining stagnant and taking action! If fear is the problem, use this powerful information to overcome it. You know what you need to do and where you need to be, you just need to step out of your own way. However, if your intuition, your gut instinct, tells you that you're on the wrong path, this can be equally as powerful. It can give you the confidence you need to walk away and the courage to pursue what is best for you

We are told to think with our heads, but never forget to always listen to your heart.

3. Are You Living In The Moment?

It can sometimes be hard to deal with certain decisions we have to make. You may have to make an important decision about your career for example.

Your mind might start racing and you begin to panic about the future or something that happened in the past that has held you back.

Ask yourself if you are living in the moment when you think about the decision. Your instinct will know what is right for you at that moment, and if you are too busy worrying about the future or the past, this can cause you to make the wrong decisions.

Try to live in the present moment and focus on the now, so that you can listen to your gut and follow your intuition to make the decision that is right for you in the now.
