There is a LOT to be said about love. And there are a lot of myths about love. Whether you’ve learned your lessons in love from the movies, from looking at the relationship between your parents or from listening to the gossip of friends, the chances are that somewhere along the line your understanding of romantic love has become somewhat skewed.
The subject of love has become so overloaded with labels and definitions of what it means to be in love, that we restrict how we receive and give love in our own romantic relationships.
It can be hard to know what the truth about love is, especially if you haven’t fallen in love with yourself. The rumors that have been spread about love might be stopping you from trying to have a relationship. But, it doesn’t have to be this way and as you read on you should find out why.
So, it’s time to reclaim love in its purest form! Start by debunking some of the biggest 5 myths about love, for more positive, longer-lasting relationships.
It has become a common misconception that true love is hard. In art, films, novels, the most passionate and intense romantic relationships are also shown to be the most dangerous and destructive.
This has only served to re-enforce the idea that if you want to experience the highest-highs of love, then you must be willing to risk the most extreme lows. Believing this may result in you putting up with (or even creating) unnecessary drama in your own romantic relationships. However, it is important to remember that whilst losing love may hurt, being in love shouldn’t.
Compromise is important for any loving, strong relationship. When two people love each other, finding a middle ground they can walk together can be paramount for their shared happiness. On the other hand, the word sacrifice implies giving up the things that are most important to who you are as a person. For example – your values, your beliefs, and your truth.
Learn to distinguish between compromising your preferences and giving up who you are.
Jealousy, in its extreme form, should never be misunderstood for passion. Whilst it’s normal, expected even, to care about your partner’s loyalty towards you, persistent jealousy is not. Do not confuse needing to control a person for loving them.
The old saying ‘love is blind’ does not necessarily refer to the physical appearance of the people we fall in love with, but rather, the faults and imperfections of that person’s character. At some time or another, forgiveness has an important part to play in all relationships. However, this should not be used to cloud our judgment when we must decide that enough is enough.
Possibly the biggest myth of all when it comes to love, is the notion that without love, we are incomplete.
Quite honestly, the idea that every person needs to find that one ‘perfect’ romantic partner to complete them is absurd. When you look at a romantic relationship as your ‘missing piece’ you immediately set your partner up to fail. After all, no other person is responsible for your happiness. Only you are responsible for that.
This is why one of the most important foundations for unshakable, lasting love with another person, is loving yourself.
Are you letting myths about love hold you back from having the romantic relationship you long for? If so, remember, you choose the definition of your experiences. So when it comes to love, define wisely, optimistically and most importantly of all, lovingly.
Hopefully seeing these myths be de-bunked has put some of your faith back in to love. Once you can start to recognize that there is more to love than you think, you should hopefully start to try and attract some love into your life.
It can be hard to re-write your limiting beliefs that you may already have about love, but it’s not impossible and I hope talking about these myths have helped you.
