It can be hard, especially in a relationship, friendship or even family member where someone displays narcissistic symptoms. It can be likely that they are fun to hang out with and you do not want to stop associating yourself with them, you may be great friends for example.
However, you may also start to feel miserable if you are continuously made to feel inferior or small. Try and stay positive and use some of our ways on how to deal with a narcissist.
If you can maintain a positive outlook, you can find it easier to deal with harder situations.
Also, sometimes people with narcissistic tendencies can often belittle others and if they can see it has affected someone or made them upset, this can spur them on to continue in doing so. If you can stay positive and show that what they are saying does not hurt you, they may think twice about their actions towards you.
Being positive is the best thing for you to do as you should also be in a better mindset. This will hopefully help you in not letting a narcissist’s behavior affect you as much.
Try and find out the situation first. A narcissist is not always a narcissist because of their personality. It can also stem from certain situations which then cause this personality trait to strengthen and become more known.
If someone who has a narcissistic personality has to work with someone who was offered a promotion instead of them, that person can develop resentment against the other. This can then bring out their narcissistic tendencies, even if they are normally not as bad. It may not be directed to you and could only be in certain situations due to anger, frustration or sadness.
Assess the situation so that you can become aware of the context of this personality trait.
It is important to set some boundaries with this particular person if the relationship has now become unhealthy due to their narcissistic personality.
Narcissists may not be able to listen or acknowledge your feelings and worries you may be experiencing. If you can set some boundaries in a calm, respectful way, they may be able to listen to you and start to try harder in your relationship.
It is possible they may get angry and defensive. In this case, maybe walk away for a little bit and revisit the conversation later on. If you can talk to this person and set boundaries, this can make the friendship/relationship easier for you. This is especially effective if you make sure to stand your ground if any boundaries are crossed.
When it comes down to it narcissists can normally be projecting their own insecurities faults or mistakes onto others. They can blame you for something that you have not done or undermined your self-esteem.
If you can take a step back and look at things from a different perspective it can start to become a little easier for you to deal with.
Try not to argue with a narcissist as unfortunately, they may not listen to what you have to say.
Instead, tell them that you disagree but do not carry on the conversation.
Realize that this is most likely not for you, but about them.
Know your self-worth and have a strong sense of self, this can make it much easier to reject any unfair blame or criticism that they could put on you.
